Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ) | Contains the right lobe of the liver, gallbladder, part of the pancreas and part of the small and large intestines. |
Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ) | Contains the left lobe of the liver, stomach, spleen, part of the pancreas, and part of the small and large intestines. |
Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ) | Contains part of the small and large intestines, appendix, right ovary, right fallopian tube, right ureter. |
Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ) | Contains part of the small and large intestines, left ovary, left fallopian tube, left ureter. |
Anatomical Position | The body is standing erect, with the face forward, the arms at the sides, and the toes and palms of the hands directed forward. |
Superior (Relative Position) | Above another part or is closer to the head. |
Inferior (Relative Position) | A part is located below another part or is closer to the feet. |
Anterior/Ventral (Relative Position) | Toward the front surface (the belly surface) |
Posterior/Dorsal (Relative Position) | Toward the back surface (the back's surface) |
Medial (Relative Position) | Toward the midline of the body. |
Lateral (Relative Position) | Away from the midline of the body. |
Proximal (Relative Position) | The part is nearer the point of attachment, often the trunk of the body. |
Distal (Relative Position) | The part is farther away from the point of attachment than is another part. |
Superficial (Relative Position) | The part is located on or near the surface of the body. |
Deep (Relative Position) | The part is located away from the surface of the body. |
Central (Relative Position) | The part is located in the center. |
Peripheral (Relative Position) | The part is away from the center. |
Right Hypochondriac Region | Upper right region at the level of the ninth rib cartilage. |
Left Hypochondriac Region | Upper left region at the level of the ninth rib cartilage. |
Epigastric Region | Region over the stomach. |
Right Lumbar Region | Right middle lateral region. |
Left Lumbar Region | Left middle lateral region. |
Umbilical Region | In the center, between the right and left lumber region; at the naval. |
Right Iliac (Inguinal) Region | Right lower lateral region. |
Left Iliac (Inguinal)Region | Left lower lateral region. |
Hypogastric Region | Lower middle region below the navel. |
Dorsal Cavity | Located toward the back of the body and has two divisions, the cranial cavity and the spinal (vertebral) cavity. |
Cranial Cavity | Located within the skull and contains the brain. |
Spinal Cavity | Extends downward from the cranial cavity and is surrounded by bony vertebrae; contains the spinal cord. |
Ventral Cavity | Located toward the front of the body and has two divisions, the thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity. |
Thoracic Cavity | Located above the diaphragm and is surrounded by the rib cage. It is divided into two compartments by the midiastinum. |
Pleural Cavity | Located in the thoracic cavity, the right and left lungs are located on either side of the midiastinum. |
Abdominopelvic Cavity | Located below the diaphragm. The upper portion of this cavity is the abdominal cavity. The lower portion of this cavity is the pelvic cavity. |
Abdominal Cavity | Contains the stomach, most of the intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys. |
Pelvic Cavity | Contains the remainder of the intestines, the rectum, urinary bladder and internal parts of the reproductive system. |
