| Term | Definition |
| Duty of care | legal obligation of a healthcare professional to take reasonable care of a patient to avoid causing harm |
| negligence | failure to take care in doing something resulting in injury to the patient |
| battery | unlawful touching of another person without consent |
| advance directive | written documentation that specifies medical treatment for a competent patient should the patient become unable to make decisions; also called a living will |
| DNR | a type of advance directive that instructs medical professionals not to perform cpr if a persons heartbeat or breathing stops. |
| durable power of attorney | a legal document that grants another person to the authority to make legal decisions for you |
| defamination | the action of damaging the good reputation of someone |
| slander | saying something that damages someone's good name or reputation |
| libel | damaging someone's good reputation or name in writing |
| standard of care | reasonable and prudent care that a practitioner of similar qualifications would have to perform in the same or similar situation |
| statute of limitations | the amount of time during which any legal action may be taken; after such time a lawsuit may not be filled |
| hippa | an act approved by the us congress in 1996 includes privacy laws for patient health records |
| confidentiality | the practice of allowing only certain individuals the right to accesses information; ensures that others do not obtain the personal information of patients |
| imformed consent | form given to a patient by a doctor explaining the benefit and risk of a procedure |
| medical ethics | standards concerned with whether a healthcare workers actions are right or wrong |
| medical law | standards concerned with whether a healthcare workers actions are leagle or illegal |
| values | the ideas, beliefs, and attitudes about what is important that help guide the way you livve |
