| dermis | fibrous connective tissue layer of skin |
| sebum | oil secreted by sebaceous glands |
| collagen | protein in skin and connective tissue |
| lesion | area of altered tissue (types: primary, secondary, vascular, purpuric) |
| patch | flat, discolored area on skin larger than 1 cm |
| wheal | area of localized swelling (edema) |
| ulcer | open sore on skin or mucous membrane that can bleed and scar |
| fissure | linear crack in skin |
| excoriation | scratch mark |
| verruca | epidermal growth caused by papilloma virus (wart) |
| comedo | plug of sebum within opening of hair follicle |
| erythema | redness of skin |
| eruption | appearance of skin lesion |
| pruritus | severe itching |
| rash | general term for skin eruption |
| suppuration | production of pus |
| urticaria | hives; eruption of wheals on skin accompanied by itching |
| xeroderma | dry skin |
| dermatosis | any disorder of the skin |
| rubella | acute but mild disease caused by rubella virus |
| carbuncle | skin infection consisting of clusters of furuncles |
| gangrene | tissue death associated with loss of blood supply |
| keratosis | thickened areas of epidermis |
| paronychia | inflammation of nail fold |
| pediculosis | infestation of lice that causes itching and dermatitis |
| onychia | inflammation of the fingernail or toenail |
| psoriasis | inherited skin disease marked by red, itchy, scaly patches |
| biopsy | removal of small piece of tissue for microscopic examination |
| excision biopsy | removal of entire lesion |
| incisional biopsy | removal of selected portion of lesion |
| shave biopsy | use of surgical blade to "shave" tissue from epidermis and upper dermis |
| antihistamine | drug that blocks effects of histamine in body |
| antipruritc | drug that relieves itching |
| antibiotic | drug that kills or inhibits growth of microorganisms |
| antifungal | drug that kills or prevents growth of fungi |
| anesthetic | drug that temporarily blocks transmission of nerve conduction to produce loss of sensation |
