| anatomical | the position with the human body upright, facing forward, with the palms facing toward the front of the body. |

| dorsal | pertaining to the back |
| dorsal recumbent | body position in which the patient is on his or her back, face up, legs separated, knees flexed with the feet flat |
| dyspnea | difficult or labored breathing |
| fenestrated | having a window or openining |
| Fowler's position | a full or partial sitting examination position |
| horizontal | not vertical; flat and even; level; parallel to the plane of the horizon |
| incompetent | not capable; not legally qualified; deficient |
| knee-chest position | body position in which the patient kneels on the exam table with buttocks elevated, back straight and chest resting on the table |
| lithotomy | an examination position wherein the patient lies on the back with thighs flexed upon the abdomen and legs flexed upon the thighs |
