| additives | chemicals designed to promote or prevent certain changes in the blood sample |
| antiseptic | substance that prevents infection |
| bacteriostatic | inhibits the growth or reproduction of bacteria but does not kill them |
| butterfly | used for venipuncture on small veins, in the hand, for pediatric and geriatric pts |
| clot activators | promotes coagulants |
| disinfectant | agent used to clean surfaces other than living tissue |
| gauge | describes the diameter of the needle's lumen |
| glycolysis | cellular reaction used to harvest energy from glucose |
| inpatients | patients admitted to the hospital |
| luer adapter | most needles are used w an evacuated tube, but the luer adapter is an alternative |
| lumen | the hollow tube within the shaft |
| multisample needle | retractable rubber sleeve that covers the second tip when it is not inserted into a tube |
| needle adapter | see "tube holder" |
| order of draw | for a multi-tube draw to ensure nothing is contaminated |
| outpatients | patients that come to a clinic/hospital that are not admitted |
| polymer gel | insert, synthetic substance whose density is between that of cells and that of blood serum or plasma |
| thixotropic gel | see "polymer gel" |
| tourniquet | prevents venous blood flow out of arm |
| tube advancement mark | indicating how far the tube can be pushed in without loosing it's vacuum |
| tube holder | ensures firm, stable connection between the needle and evacuated tube |
| whole blood | blood collected and mixed with and anticoagulant |
| winged infusion set | see "butterfly" |
