Volume/Capacity Name | Definition |
Tidal Volume (TV) | volume of air exchanged in one cycle of respiration |
Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV) | volume of air that can be inhaled after tidal respiration |
Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV) | volume of air that can be expired following passive, tidal expiration |
Resting Lung Volume | also known as expiratory reserve volume; volume of air that can be expired following passive, tidal expiration |
Residual Volume (RV) | volume of air remaining in the lungs after a maximum exhalation |
Dead Air | volume of air within the conducting passageways that cannot be involved in gas exchange (included as a component of residual volume) |
Vital Capacity (VC) | the volume of air that can be inhaled following a maximal exhalation |
Vital Capacity (VC) | includes inspiratory reserve volume, tidal volume, and expiratory reserve volume ( = IRV + TV + ERV) |
Functional Residual Capacity | the volume of air in the body at the ends of passive exhalation |
Functional Residual Capacity | includes expiratory reserve and residual volumes ( = ERV + RV) |
Total Lung Capacity (TLC) | the sum of inspiratory reserve volume, tidal volume, expiratory reserve volume and residual volume ( = IC + FRC) |
Inspiratory Capacity (IC) | the maximum inspiratory volume possible after tidal expiration ( = TV + IRV) |
