Term | Definition |
Anatomical | Body is standing erect, facing forward, with the arms at the sides, and the palms facing forward. |
Anterior/Ventral | Means the front side of the body |
Posterior/Dorsal | Means the back side of the body |
Inferior | Below another structure. (Ex. the vagina is inferior to or below the uterus) |
Superior | Means above another structure. (Ex. the stomach is superior to the large intestine) |
Lateral | Means to the side. (Ex. the eyes are lateral to the nose) |
Medial | Means middle or near the medial plane of the body. (Ex. the nose is medial to the eyes) |
Superficial | Means on or near the surface, as with a scratch on the skin. |
Proximal | Means near the point of attachment to the truck. (Ex. the proximal end of the thighbone joins the hipbone) |
Distal | Means away from the point of attachment to the truck. (Ex. the distal end of the thighbone joins the knee bone) |
Supine | Means lying on one's spine facing upward |
Prone | Means lying on one's stomach facing downward |
Sagittal Plane | Divides the body into two parts, right and left. If the plane divides the body into equal right and left parts, it is called "midsagittal plane" |
Frontal or Coronal Plane | Divides the body into anterior and posterior sections. |
Transverse Plane | Divides the body horizontally into a top, or superior, part, and a bottom, or inferior, part. |
