Cowpers gland | pea sized glands located under the prostate; provide lubrication during intercoarse |
testicles | primary organ; produce sperm and testosterone |
scrotum | sac that contains the testicles |
spermatic chord | suspends the testicles within the scrotum, contains blood vessels, nerves, lymphatic vessels and vas deferens |
testosterone | male hormone that is responsible for secondary sex characteristics |
seminiferous tubules | found in the testes, produce sperm and testosterone |
epididymis | located on top of the testes; sperm mature here becoming more motile and fertile |
seminal vesicles | secrete seminal fluid |
prostate gland | located below the bladder; secretes a substance that increases the motility of sperm and neutralizes the vaginal secretions |
urethra | transports the sperm outside of the penis |
ejaculatory duct | located on each side of the prostate and merges with the urethra |
semen | combination of sperm and various secretion |

prepuce | foreskin; loose retractable skin that covers the tip of the penis |

BPH | benign prostatic hypertrophy; overgrowth of the prostate tissue |
anorchism | absence of one or both testicles |
balanitis | inflammation of the glans penis |
cyptorchidism | undescended testicles |
epispadias | congenital defect where the urethra opens on the upper side of the penis |
orchitis | inflammation of the testes |
hydrocele | accumulation of fluid within the scrotal sac |
hypospadias | congenital defect where the urethra opens on the under side of the penis |
impotence | inability to sustain or obtain an erection |
varicocele | abnormal dilitation of the spermatic chord |
castration | surgical removal of the tetes |
orchidectomy | surgical removal of the testicle |
circumcision | surgical removal of foreskin |
vasectomy | surgical procedure that cuts and ties the vas deferns, prevent sperm from entering semen |
syphillis | bacterial infection is treated with PCN G |
the three stages of syphillis | primary, secondary tertiary |
primary syphillis | characterized by small, painless, red pustules on the skin; highly contagious and appears within 10 days of exposure |
secondary syphillis | occurs 2 months after exposure; presents as a rash on palms of hands and soles of feet |
tertiary syphillis | may present 2-7 years later; can lead to life threatening disorders of the brain, spinal cord and heart |
gonorrhea | bacterial STD; greenish-yellow discharge; dysuria |
genital herpes | viral STD; no cure. presents as vesicles that rupture and ulcerate. |
genital warts | small, cauliflower like growths on the penis. caused by HPV |
chlamydia | bacterial STD that causes urethritis and epididymitis |
gonad | male sex glands; testes |
epididymectomy | surgical removal of the epididymis |
ejaculation | process of expelling semen from the male urethra |
andropause | change of life for men, decrease in male hormones occurring in late 40's. |
