Question | Answer |
Cerebral Cortex | The Cerebral Cortex is the largest part of the brain. It is also known as the Cerebrum |
Left Hemisphere | Left side of the Cerebral Cortex responsible for mathematical and logical reasoning, problem solving, memory recall, language processing, speech and language |
Right Hemisphere | Right side of the Cerebral Cortex responsible for facial recognition and emotional analysis of words |
Frontal Lobe | Responsible for Thoughts/Intelligence, control of skeletal muscles, consequences of action, speech and taste |
Parietal Lobe | Responsible for Touch, temperature, pain and vibration |
Temporal Lobe | Responsible for hearing and smell |
Occipital Lobe | Responsible for Vision |
Olfactory Bulb | Located at the inferior/anterior part of the frontal lobe. Receives neural input about odors coming from the nasal cavity |
Corpus Callosum | Connecting neurons between R/L Hemispheres. Responsible for communication and coordination of activity between hemispheres |
Diencephalon | Includes the: Thalmus, Hypothalmus, Fornix, Pineal Gland and Optic Chiasm |
Thalamus | Oval Shaped. Functions as the relay station of the majority of the information coming into the Cerebral Cortex |
Hypothalmus | Below the Thalamus. Responsible for regulation of the Autonomic Nervous System including sleep/wake cycles |
Fornix | C Shaped - lies below the Corpus Callosum. Responsible for recall of long term memory |
Pineal Glad | Posterior to the Thalamus and Hypothalamus. Responsible for the secretion of Melatonin. |
Optic Chiasm | X-Shaped nerve below the Hypothalamus. X-shape caused by the crossing over of the optic nerves. Connects the eyes and the brain |
Brain Stem | Includes the Midbrain (Mesencephalon), the Pons and the Medulla Oblongotta, Corpora Quadrigemina |
Midbrain | Part of the Central Nervous System (CNS). Also called the Mesencephalon) Associated with hearing, vision, motor control, temperature regulation |
Pons | Below the Midbrain. Carries signals from the Brain to the Cerebellum and carries sensory information to the Thalamus. |
Medulla Oblongotta | Below the Pons. Center for respiration and circulation |
Corpora Quadrigemina | Posterior to the midbrain above the Cerebellum. Reflex center involving vision and hearing |
Cerebellum | (Small Brain). Regulates voluntary motor movement. Includes the Cerebellar Cortex and the Arbor Vitae |
Cerebellar Cortex | Involved in the planning and timing of movement |
Arbor Vitae | Branched tree-like appearance located deep in the cerebellum, Brings sensory and motor information to and from the cerebellum |
Circulation of the CSF (Cerebral Spinal Fluid) | Lateral Ventricles > Interventricular Foramen > Third Ventricle > Cerebral Aqueduct > Fourth Ventricle > Out to the subarachnoid space |
Grey Matter | Pinkish/Grey. Made up of Nerve Cell bodies (cell bodies, dendrites and axon terminals) |
White Matter | Whitish color due to the Myelin covering the Axons. Made up of Axons. Communication between white matter and grey mater and other parts of the body |
Meninges | Membrane layers of the brain - Dura Mater, Arachnoid, and Pia Mater |
