Accreditation | Vouching for compliance with established criteria |
Ambulatory Pharmacy | Generally located within, or in close proximity to a clinic, hospital, or med center. |
Automated Dispensing Tech | E Storage cabinets or robotics that secure meds and dispense them as needed |
Automated Med Dispensing Device | Drug storage device or cabinet that contains an inventory of medication that are electronically dispensed so they may be administered in a controlled manner. |
Brand-name | Drug under patent and can only be made by said patent holder |
Buccal | Solid medication dosage placed between the cheek and gum so that it can enter the bloodstream through the cheek. |
Centralized Dispensing Automation | Tech that assists in drug selection and dispensing of drug products located in a central location. |
Centralized Pharmacy | Provides services from one location (usually centrally located) |
Certification | Voluntary process where a non-gov't agency grants recognition based on criteria met. |
Chain Pharmacy | Corporately owned pharmacies that share a name and carry similarly branded OTC's |
Community Pharmacy | Stand-alone pharmacy in a community that provides ambulatory meds |
Controlled Substance | Drugs whose very existence is controlled by the Federal Controlled Substances Act and by state laws |
Decentralized Pharmacy | Provides meds near patient areas. Often supported by a central pharmacy. |
Dispensing | Preparing a med in accordance with the prescription |
Drug Distribution Services | Distribution system beginning when meds are received and ending when its handed off to a patient. |
DEA | Drug Enforcement Agency; the people who back up controlled and illegal substance laws |
Expectorate | Cough up or spit |
Generic | Drug no longer under patent and that can be massed produced by different manufacturers. |
HIPAA | Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act; Federal laws that protect a patients information |
Inhalant | Fine powder or solution meant to enter the blood through the respiratory tract. |
Intracardiac | Injected directly into heart muscle |
Intradermal | Injected directly into the top layers of skin |
Intramuscular | Injected into muscle to get absorbed into the bloodstream |
Intraperitoneal | Injected into the abdominal cavity |
Intrapleural | Injected into the sac that surrounds the lungs |
Intrathecal | Injected into cerebral spinal fluid |
Intravenous | Injected directly into a vein |

Licensure | Process where the gov't grants permission to an individual to practice in their desired field |
Lozenge | Candy that contains the meds within, and is released as it is sucked |
Mail-order Pharmacy | Warehouse-like pharmacy where pharmacists and techs prepare meds and send them out by mail. |
MAR | Medication Administration Record; part of medical records that document the time and date that a patient received their meds |
Medication order | A written, electronic, telephone, or verbal request for a patient med in an in-patient setting. |
NDC Number | National Drug Code; Unique number that denotes a specific drug's strength and package size for ID purposes. |
Ointment | Semi-solid med dose applied to the skin or mucous membranes that lubricates and softens or is used as a base of drug delivery |
OTC | Over-the-Counter |
Package Insert | Info sheet included with a drug that provides the drug's basic info. |
Parenteral | Route of med administration that bypasses the gastrointestinal tract. |
Par-level System | Inventory management system where drugs' minimum and maximum quantities need to be maintained. |
Patient Counseling | Educating a patient about there medication(s) that they're taking. |
Pharmacist | Health care professional licensed by the state to practice pharmacy and further the science of pharmacology. |
Pharmacy Satellite | Physical space in or near a patient care area that can provide a variety of distributive and clinical services. |
Practice of Pharmacy | A science regulated by each state through laws and regulations. |
Prescription | Written or verbal authorization, by an authorized prescriber, for the use of a particular pharmaceutical agent. |
1* Prescription Label | Label affixed to a dispensed drug product, that contains legally required info. |
Professional | Practitioner of a vocation that requires specialized training. |

Registration | Process of making a list or being enrolled in an existed list. |
