Question | Answer |
Anterior | Teeth in the front of the mouth. Example: The central incisors are anterior to the molars. |
Medial | Toward or nearer to the midline of the mouth. Example: The centrals are medial to the laterals. |
Proximal | The point closest to the point of attachment. Example: The root is proximal to the crown. |
Superior | Above or higher. Example: The maxillary teeth are superior to the mandibular teeth. |
Posterior | Toward the back of the mouth. Example: The molars are posterior to the central incisors. |
Lateral | Towards the side, away from the midline. Example: The cuspids are lateral to the central incisors. |
Distal | The part farther away from the midline. Example: The surface of the tooth that is furthest from the midline. |
Inferior | Below or under. Example: The tounge is inferior to the palate. |
Maxillary Arch | Stationary upper arch not capable of movement. Primary bone structure is the Maxilla. |
Mandibular Arch | Lower arch capable of movement by action of the temporomandibular joint. Primary bone structure is the Mandible. |
Facial View | Tooth surface closest to the face (or cheek). |
Lingual View | Tooth surface closest to the tongue. |
