Term | Definition |
ECG: | Graphic representation of the electrical activity of the heart |
SA Node: | Specialized cells that initiates the heart beats, sets its pace and has a rate of 60-100 impulses. |
AV Node: | Specialize cells located in the lower right atrial septum-has a rate of 40-60 impulses per minute. |
Bundle of His: | Has an intrinsic rate of 20-40 impulses per minute. |
Automaticity: | The ability of cardiac cells to generate its own electrical stimulus |
Conductivity: | Cardiac cells to receive a stimulus from a neighboring cell and pass it to the next. |
Polarization: | Cardiac cells are in a resting, negatively charged state |
Depolarization: | Cells are discharging a positively charged electrical impulse to create a contraction |
Repolarization: | Transformation of cardiac cells from an active to resting state for recharging. |
P Wave: | Demonstrates atrial depolarization |
QRS Complex: | Demonstrates ventricular depolarization |
T Wave: | Demonstartes ventricular repolarization |
Isoelectric Line: | There is no upward or downward deflection is present indicating no electrical activity or voltage |
Segment: | Lines between or connecting waves. |
Interval: | A wave in addition to a connecting line. |
Large Block (Horizontally) | 0.2 Seconds |
Large Block (Veritically) | 0.5 Millivolts |
Unipolar Leads: | Represent 9 out of 12 leads |
aVR: | Heart voltage between right arm electrode and a central point between left arm and left leg |
aVL: | Heart voltage between left arm electrode and a central point between right arm and left leg |
aVF: | Heart voltage between left leg electrode and a central point between right arm and left arm |
V1: | Electrode is placed at the fourth intercostal space just to the right of the sternum |
V2: | Electrode is placed at the fourth intercostal space just to the left of the sternum. |
V4: | Electrode is placed at the left mid-clavicular line in the fifth intercostal space. |
V3: | Electrode is placed midway between leads V2 and V4. |
V5: | Electrode is placed anterior left axillary line at the same level as V4. |
V6: | The electrode is placed at the left mid-axillary line at the same level as lead V4. |
Artifact: | Defects on the electrocardiogram due to the electrical activity of the heart interferes. |
Wandering Baseline Artifact: | Caused by loose electrodes. |
Bipolar Lead: | Measures cardiac electrical activity between two extremities; between a negative and a positive electrode. |
Lead I: | Measures electrical activity from the right arm to the left arm |
Lead II: | Used for rhythm lead. |
Lead III: | Measures electrical activity from left arm to left leg. |
Somatic Tremor: | Due to involuntary muscle movement aka muscle artifact. |
