osteoblasts | bone building cells |
osteocytes | calls that maintain bony matrix |
osteoclasts | cells responsible for the reabsorption of bone matrix and the release of calcium from bone |
compartment syndrome | nerve and blood vessel damage resulting from edema and sweeling in the area of a fracture |
osteomyelitis | infection of the bone occuring from surgery from a fracture |
Lamella | concentric, cylinder-shaped layers of calcified matrix |
Lacunae | ("little lakes") small spaces containing tissue fluid in which bone cells lie imprisioned between the hard layers of lamella |
Canaliculi | ultra small canals radiating in all directions from lacunae connecting them to each other and to the Haversian canal |
Haversian Canal | Extends lengthwise through center of Haversian system contains blood and lymphatic vessels |
Volkmann's canals | transverse communicating canals containing nerves and vessels that carry blood and lymph from exterior surface of the bone to osteons |
