| Term | Definition |
| Caudal | Closer to the tail (coccyx) - does not apply to lower limbs so is not interchangeable with the term Inferior |
| Cranial | Closer to the head (cephalic) |
| Distal | Farthest from the base (or root/girdle) of the limb |
| Dorsal | Back surface of the entire body (1. Back 2. Back of hand 3. Top of foot 4. The surface of the penis which is facing forward when the penis is flaccid) |
| Fascia | Fibrous conective tissue continuously enveloping the whole body, individual muscles, and parts of muscles |
| Lateral | Farthest from the median plane. Closer to the outside of the body. |
| Medial | Closer to the mid-line of the body. Towards the median or mid sagittal plane. |
| Proximal | Closer to the base root of the limb. Girdle is the most priximal point. |
| Inferior | Refers to something being more to the feet, or below |
| Superior | Refers to something being more to the head, or above |
