extension | the angle between the articulating bones increases, usually occurs in the sagittal plane |
hyperextension | extension movement that continues past the anatomic position |
abduction | movement of a bone away from the midline, usually in the coronal plane |
adduction | movement of a bone toward the midline, usually in the coronal plane |
rotation | a bone pivots around its own longitudinal axis |
pronation | rotation of the forearm whereby the palm is turned posteriorly |
supination | rotation of the forearm whereby the palm is turned anteriorly |
circumduction | a continuous movement that combines flexion, abduction, extension, and adduction in succession-- the distal end of the limb or digit moves in a circle |
elevation | movement of a body part superiorly |
depression | movement of a body part inferiorly |
protraction | anterior movement of a body part from anatomic position |
retraction | posterior movement of a body part from anatomic position |
angular motion | the angle between articulating bones increases or decreases |
lateral flexion | the vertebral column moves in either lateral direction along a coronal plane |
flexion example | tilt head forward |
extension example | bring bent knee forward to stand flat |
hyperextension example | tilt head backwards to look upwards |
abduction example | spread fingers apart |
adduction example | bringing legs together while doing a jumping jack |
rotation example | shake head "no" |
circumduction example | twirl leg in a circle at the hip |
