Question | Answer |
Three parts of appendicular skeleton | girdles (pelvic and pectoral), upper limbs, lower limbs |
Parts of upper limb | arm, forearm, wrist, hand |
Parts of lower limb | thigh, leg, foot |
arm | brachial |
forearm | antebrachial |
wrist | carpal |
hand | manus |
thigh | femoral |
leg | crural |
foot | pes |
Spine | divides the posterior side of the scapula into two parts |
glenoid cavity | articulates with the humerus, shallow, allows for lots of mobility |
acromion | superior bony cap/roof over shoulder joint |
Function of acromion #1 | forms protective cover from impact on top |
Function of acromion #2 | attachment point for clavicle |
Function of acromion #3 | attachment point for muscles that allow you to shrug your shoulder, extend your arm laterally, etc |
coracoid process function | attachment for muscles that pull the arm forward |
coracoid process structure | found on the anterior side of the scapula, hooks around |
supraspinous fossa | on posterior side of the scapula, superior to the spine, shoulder muscle attachment site |
infraspinous fossa | on posterior side of the scapula, inferior to the spine, shoulder muscle attachment site |
subscapular fossa | on anterior side of scapula, muscle attachment site |
clavicle location | runs from acromion to manubrium of the sternum |
clavicle function | only point of attachment for the scapula to the rest of the skeletal system |
head of humerus | fits into the glenoid cavity of the scapula |
greater and lesser tubercles | ridges by the head of the humerus for muscle attachment |
intertubercular sulcus | groove between the tubercles which a tendon passes through |
capitulum | articulates with the radius (articular surface) |
trochlea | articulates with the ulna, saddle-shaped |
lateral and medial epicondyles of humerus | attachment point for forearm muscles |
Location of the radius | thumb side |
location of the ulna | little finger side |
radial tuberosity | attachment point for the biceps brachii muscle, mostly on the anterior side |
head of the radius | like a hockey puck, disk that lets us spin our arm, articulates with the capitulum of the humerus |
styloid process (of the radius) | bony projection on the lateral side of the wrist, just proximal to the thumb |
olecranon | triceps attach here, felt at the tip of the bent elbow, posterosuperior aspect of the trochlear notch |
trochlear notch | BIG, fits the trochlea of the humerus |
radial notch | head of radius fits here, allows us to turn our palms up and down |
styloid process (of the ulna) | posteromedial process on the head that may be felt on the medial side of the wrist |
number of carpal bones in the wrist | 8 |
right and left os coxae (ossa coxae) | half of the pelvis, made up of three fused bones |
ilium | superior pubic bone, blade-like |
ischium | inferior/posterior pubic bone, 'sit down bone??', contacts seat |
pubis | inferior/anterior pubic bone, only one of the three in which the right and left sides contact each other |
acetabulum | hip joint, large and deep cavity-- less range of mobility |
obturator foramen | space encircled by the pubis and ischium, thigh muscles attach along the opening of the hole |
sacroiliac joint | point where the sacrum and the pelvic girdle connect |
iliac crest | the superior-most ridge of the ilium |
anterior superior iliac spine | projection from which the iliac crest arises |
pubic symphysis | site of articulation between the pubic bones, fibrocartilage here |
ischial tuberosity | attachment point for thigh muscles, roughened projection on the posterolateral border of the ischium, support the weight of the body when seated |
head of femur | part of the femur that articulates with the acetabulum |
neck of femur | joins the head and the shaft of the femur, elongated and prominent |
greater and lesser trochanters | attachment site for thigh muscles that allow for extension and abduction of leg, two processes originating near the proximal end of the femur |
medial and lateral condyles | on the distal, inferior surface of the femur, form part of the knee joint, smooth, oval articulating surfaces |
medial and lateral epicondyles | attachment sites for ligaments and muscles, superior to the condyles |
patella | kneecap, held within tendons, slides back and forth between the two condyles of the femur |
tibia | larger crural bone that supports most of the weight, medial |
tibial tuberosity | on the anterior surface of the tibia near the medial and lateral condyles, attachment site for the patellar ligament |
medial malleolus | hook-shaped, on medial side of ankle bones |
fibula | thin, articulates with the tibia--not the femur, lateral |
lateral malleolus | distal tip of the fibula, extends to the ankle joint to provide stability, bump on the lateral side of the ankle |
talus | ankle bone, connects to the tibia |
calcaneus | heel, very large and prominent attachment site for the achilles tendon |
number of tarsals in the ankle and foot | 7 |
