Question | Answer |
vertebral column or spine | the spine, formed of a number of indiidual bones called vertebrae and two composite bones |
vertebrae | each of the series of small bones forming the backbone, having several projections for articulation and muscle attachment, and a hole through which the spinal cord passes |
intervertebral dics | the disc of fibrocartilage between the vertebrae. |
herniated discs | is a condition in which the annulus fibrosus of the vertebral disc is torn, enabling the nucleus to herniate or extrude through the fibers |
primary curvatures | the ventrally concave curve of the fetal vertebral column, retained in the thoracic and sacral regions as the thoracic and sacral kyphoses. |
secondary curvatures | ventrally convex curves of the vertebral column that develop postnatally in the cervical and lumbar regions: the cervical and lumbar lordoses. |
body or centrum | the center especially of an anatomical part. |
vertebral arch | in eleven parts, consisting of two pedicles, two laminae, and seven processes. The laminae give attachment to the ligamenta flava. |
vertebral foramen | the opening formed by a neural arch through which the spinal cord passes. |
transverse processes | a lateral process of a vertebra. |
spinous process | protrudes where the laminae of the vertebral arch join and provides the point of attachment for muscles and ligaments of the spine. |
superior & inferior articular processes | the articular surface of the inferior articular process of vertebrae, articulating with the superior articular facet of the vertebra below to form a zygapophysial joint. |
cervical vertebrae | are those vertebrae immediately inferior to the skull. Thoracic vertebrae in all mammalian species are defined as those vertebrae that also carry a pair of ribs, and lie caudal to the cervical vertebrae. |
atlas | a book of maps or charts |
axis | an imaginary line about which a body rotates. |
dens | a wild animal's lair or habitation |
thoracic vertebrae | each of the twelve bones of the backbone to which the ribs are attached. |
lumbar vertebrae | the lumbar vertebrae are the five vertebrae between the rib cage and the pelvis. |
sacrum | a triangular bone in the lower back formed from fused vertebrae and situated between the two hipbones of the pelvis. |
coccyx | a small, triangular bone at the base of the spinal column in humans and some apes, formed of fused vestigial vertebrae. |
