Term | Definition |
Anterior (ventral) | Near the front of the body |
Posterior (dorsal) | Near the back of the body |
Medial | Pertaining to the midline of the body |
Lateral | Pertaining to the side |
Proximal | Near the attachment of an extremity |
Distal | Farther from the attachment of the body |
Superior (cranial) | Toward the head or upper portion of a structure |
Inferior (caudal) | Away from the head; toward the tail or lower part of a structure |
Superficial (external) | Toward the surface of the body |
Deep (internal) | Away from the surface of the body |
Prone | Lying Horizontal with the face downward |
Supine | Lying on the back with the face upward |
Palmar | Pertaining to the palm of the hand |
Plantar | Pertaining to the sole of the foot |
Sagittal | Cuts through the midline of the body from front to back and divides the body into right and left sections |
Frontal (coronal) | Cuts at a right angle to the midline cut, and divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) sections |
Transverse (horizontal) | Cuts horizontally through the body and separates the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) sections |
Cranial | Space inside skull (cranium) containing brain |
Spinal (vertebral) | Space inside spinal column containing the spinal cord |
Dorsal (posterior aspect) | Cranial and spinal cavities combine to create the dorsal cavity or posterior aspect |
Thoracic (Chest) | Space containing the heart, lungs, esophagus, trachea, bronchi, thymus (also the mediastinum, pleural, and pericardial cavities |
Abdominal | Space containing the lower portion of the esophagus, the stomach, intestines (excluding the sigmoid colon and rectum), kidneys, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and ureters |
Pelvic | Space containing the urinary bladder, certain reproductive organs, part of the large intestines and the rectum |
Abdominopelvic | Abdominal and pelvic cavities combine to create the abdominopelvic cavity. |
Ventral | Thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities combine to create the ventral cavity |
