| Term | Definition |
| Anatomy | The study of the structures of the body. |
| Physiology | The study of the functions of the body structures. |
| vertical plane | An up-and-down line that is at a right angel to the horizon. |
| midsagittal plane (a vertical plane) | Also known as midline, is the vertical plane that divided the body from top to bottom, into equal left and right halves. |
| sagittal plane (a vertical plane) | Any vertical plane parallel to the midline that divides the body into unequal left and right portions. |
| coronal plane (a vertical plane) | Also know as the frontal plane, which is any vertical plane that divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions. |
| horizontal or transverse plane | A flat crosswise line like the horizon that divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions. |
| ventral | Refers to the front or belly side of the body or organ. |
| anterior | Situated in the front. |
| superior | Uppermost, above, or toward the head. |
| cepahlic | Toward the head. |
| proximal | Situated nearest the midline or beginning of a body structure. |
| dorsal | The direction toward or nearer the midline. |
| posterior | Situated in the back. |
| inferior | Lowermost, below, or toward the feet. |
| caudal | Toward the lower part of the body. |
| distal | Situated farthest from the midline or beginning of a body structure. |
| lateral | The direction toward or nearer the side. |
| bilateral | Relating to two sides or having two sides. |
