bradycardia | slow heart rate, less than 60 bpm |
bradypnea | slow breathing |

carotid pulse | pulse located in the neck |

Cheyne Stokes | breathing pattern characterized by slow, shallow breaths that increase in depth & frequency, followed by short periods of apnea |
cyanosis | bluish discoloration of skin and/or mucous membranes from a lack of oxygen |
dorsalis pedis pulse | pulse felt at the top of the foot |
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) | serves as the public's advocate for a clean environment |
essential hypertension | high blood pressure from an unknown reason |
eupnea | normal breathing |
exhalation | breathing out |
expiration | the process of exhalation |

femoral pulse | pulse felt in the groin |

Korotkoff sounds | 5 phases of sounds heard when taking blood pressure |
mercury | toxic material used in some measuring devices |
non-pathogenic | microorganism that does not cause disease |
nosocomial infection | infection acquired in the hospital that is unrelated to the primary condition |

pathogenic | microorganism that DOES cause disease; virus, bacteria |
popliteal pulse | pulse felt at the back of the knee |
pulse rate | number of beats per minute (BPM) |
pulse rhythm | regularity of time between each beat |
pulse volume | strength of the heart beat |
radial pulse | pulse felt at the base of the thumb |
rales | abnormal crackling sound heard during respiration |
respiration | breathing in & out one time |
rhonchi | wheezing sound heard when the airway is obstructed |
secondary hypertension | high blood pressure caused by another condition |
sphygmomanometer | instrument used to measure blood pressure |
stertorous | snoring sound occurring during inspiration |
stethoscope | instrument used to auscultate body sounds |
sublingual | under the tongue |
tachycardia | fast heart rate - greater than 100 bpm |
tachypnea | fast breathing |
temporal pulse | pulse felt at the temples |
thread pulse | a weak pulse that is scarcely palpable |
universal precautions | guidelines used to prevent the spread of disease (hand washing, gloves, masks) |
