| Term | Definition |
| Forebrain | Largest brain region, consists of corpus callosum and cerebral cortex. |
| Corpus callosum | Thick band of axons connecting the two hemispheres of the cerebral cortex. |
| Cerebral cortex | Divided into two hemispheres and responsible for sophisticated mental functions. |
| Midbrain | Contains structures involved in processing visual and auditory information. |
| Hindbrain | Region at base of brain that connects the brain to the spinal cord. Consists of pons, medulla, reticular formation, and cerebellum. |
| Pons | Helps coordinate movements on left and right sides of body. |
| Cerebellum | Coordinates movement, balance, and posture. |
| Reticular formation | Helps regulate attention and alertness. |
| Medulla | Controls breathing, heart beat, and other vital life functions. |
| Neurogenesis | The development of new neurons |
