Term | Definition |
Medial | Refers to the middle or near the middle of the body |
Posterior | more toward the back or spinal cord side of the body |
Anterior | More toward the front or belly side of the body |
Inferior | more toward the feet or tail, or below another structure |
Superior | more toward the head or above another structure |
viscera | Name of the internal organs of the body |
Thoracic Cavity | Ventral body cavity in the chest that contains lungs and heart |
Spinal Cavity | Dorsal body cavity within the spinal column that contains the spinal cords |
mediastinum | central region of chest cavity, contains organs between the lungs ( heart , aorta, esophagus, and trachea) |
Diaphragm | Major muscle of inspiration. Separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity |
Cranial Cavity | A dorsal body cavity. it is within the skull and contains the brain |
abdominopelvic cavity | a ventral cavity consisting of the abdominal and pelvic cavities. contains digestive, urinary, and reproductive organs |
supine | Body lying down horizontally facing upward |
prone | body lying down horizontally facing downward |
distal | located farther away from the point of attachment to the body |
proximal | located nearer to the point of attachment to the body |
lateral | refers to the side |
superficial | more towards the surface of the body |
deep | farther away from the surface of the body |
four quadrants | Right upper quadrant , right lower quadrant , left upper quadrant , left lower quadrant |
abdominal cavity | the superior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity |
Epigastric | above the stomach |
intervertabral | between the vertebrae |
intramuscular | within the muscle |
pericardium | around the heart |
postnasal | behind the nose |
retrostrenal | behind the sternum |
substrenal | under the sternum |
suprastrenal | above the sternum |
transurethral | across the urethra |
cytology | the study of cells and its function |
histology | study of tissues |

Anatomic position | Body standing up straight, arms to the side, palms facing forward. Eyes looking straight ahead, feet and toes pointing forward |
Sagittal Plane | splits body into right and left portions (aka medial) |
Frontal (coronal) Plane | divides body into a front and back side |
Transverse (Horizontal) Plane | Divides body into upper and lower portions |
