Congenital | disease caused by an abnormality in fetal development or an abnormal process that occurs during gestation or birth |
Degenerative | disease caused by progressive destruction of cells due to disease or the aging process |
Environmental | disease caused by exposure to substances in the environment |
Hereditary | disease caused by an inherited or spontaneous mutation iin the genetic material of a cell |
Iatrogenic | disease caused by medicine or treatment given to the patient |
Idiopathic | disease having no identifiable or confirmed cause |
Infectious | disease caused by a pathogen |
Neoplastic | disease caused by the growth of a beign or a malignant tumor or mass |
Nosocomial | disease caused by exposure to a disease-causing agent while the patient is in the hospital |
Nutritional | caused by lack of nutritious food, insufficient amounts of food, or an inability to utilize the ntrients in food |
Symptom | a deviation from health that is only experience and felt by the patient |
Sign | when a symptom can be seen or detected by others |
Symptomatology | the clinical picture of all the patient's symptoms and signs |
Syndrome | set of symptoms and signs associated with a specific disease |
Acute | symptoms and signs that occur suddenly and are severe in nature |
Subacute | symptoms and signs that are less sever in intensity than acute symptoms |
Chronic | symptoms or signs that continue for 3 months or longer |
Inspection | using the eyes or an instrument to examine the body |
Palpation | using the fingers to press obn a body part to detect a mass, an enlarged organ, tenderness, or pain |
Auscultation | using a stethoscopeto listen to the heart, lungs, or intestines |
Percussion | tapping one finger on another finger of a hand that is spread across the chest or abdomen to listen for differences in sound in a body cavity |
Diagnosis | a determination based on knowledge about the cause of the patient's sign and symptoms |
Exacerbation | sudden worsening in the severity of symptoms or signs |
Sequela | abnormal condition or complication that is caused by the original disease and remains after the original disease has resolved |
Remission | temporary improvement in the symptoms and signs of a disease without the underlying disease being cured |
Relapse | a recurrence of symptoms of a disease after a period of improvement |
Prognosis | predicted course and outcome of a disease |
Recuperation | process of return to a normal state of health |
Disability | permanent inability to perform certain activities or function in a given way |
Terminal Illness | a disease from which there is no hope of recovery and onbe that will eventually result in the patient's death |
Refractory | pertaining to a disease that does not respond well to treatment |
Attending Physician | physician on the medical staff of a hospital who admits patients, directs their care, and discharges them |
Nurse | a licensed health-care professional who practices independently or is supervised by a physician, surgeon, or dentist and who is skilled in promoting and maintaining health |
Long Term Care Facillity | residential facility for persons who are unable to care for themselves. |
Home Health Agency | agency that provides nursing and non-nursing services to patients in their homes. |
Hospice | facility or program designed to provide a caring environment for meeting the physical and emotional needs of the terminally ill |
Palliative Care | supportive medical and nursing care that keeps the patient comfortable but does not cure the disease |
