Bacteria | Bacterial structure |
Mycoplasma | dont have a cell wall nor peptidoglycan, just has a membrane w/ cholesterol |
Chlamydia | dont have peptidoglycan in cell wall |
Gram-negative | thin peptidoglycan wall encased by outer membrane w/ LPA that is lipid A an endotoxin, the outer membrane has porins |
Gram-positive | thick peptidoglycan wall & techoic acid that attracts TNF & IL-1 |
Spores | contain dipicolinic acid that can survive for thousands of years |
Capsule | layer of meshed molecules around the bacterium, external to its cell wall, another type of outer covering is known as a slime layer |
Cx important encapsulated bacteria | Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenzae |
Mycobacteria | have waxy cell walls containing mycolic acid |
