Pancreas | Posteriro to great curvature of stomach and adjacent medially to duodenum. Breaks down proteins, carbs, nucleic acids, and lipids. Reduces acidity of duodenum as well |
Head | Curvature of duodenum; features Uncinate process, which clings to superior mesenteric artery and vein |
Body and Tail | Superior and to the left |
Pancreatic Duct | Larger of two ducts; joins with common bile duct from liver and gallbladder. |
Hepatopancreatic Ampulla (Ampulla of Vater) | Combo of common bile duct and pancreatic duct at duodenum |
Major Duodenal Papilla | Hepatopancreatic ampulla open onto this elevation |
Accessory Duct (Duct of Santorini) | Leads to pancreas and empties into duodenum superior to hepatopancreatic ampulla |
Pancreatic Acini | Exocrine portion of organ; forms a central cavity (duct). Cells here produce pancreatic juice (enzymes) |
Pancreatic Islets | 1% of cells. Endocrine portion -- into blood via glucagon, insulin, somatostatin and polypeptides. |
