Astigmatism | defect in the curvature of the eyeball surface |
Cataract | opacity or clouding of the lens |
Conjunctivitis | inflammation of the conjunctiva |
Cryosurgery | surgery to freeze the borders of a retinal hole with a frozen-tip probe |
Diabetic retinopathy | disorder of retinal blood vessels characterized by hemorrhage, and microaneurysms, exudates, formation of new vessels and connective tissue leading to total retinal detachment and blindness. |
Enucleation | surgical removal of the eyeball. |
Exopthalmos | protrusion of the eyeball. |
Glaucoma | disorder of elevated pressure in the eye |
Hyperopia | farsightedness (inability to see objects at close range). |
Keratitis | inflammation of the cornea. |
Keratoplasty | excision of corneal tissue, followed by surgical implantation of a donor cornea. |
Miotic | substance that contracts the pupil. |
Mydriatic | substance that dilates the pupil |
Myopia | nearsightedness (the inability to see objects that are far from the viewer). |
Radial keratotomy | surgery that uses partial thickness, radial incisions in the cornea, leaving an uncut optical center. |
Retinal detachment | separation of the retina from the choroid. |
Sjogren’s syndrome | decreased tear secretion and increased tear evaporation, with dry mouth. Also known as "Dry Eye Syndrome" |
Snellen’s test | assessment of visual acuity. |
Strabismus | inability of the eyes to focus in the same direction. |
