Term | Definition |
Digestion | food is broken down mechanically and chemically. Then travels through the gastrointestinal tract. |
Absorption | 1-digested food passes into bloodstream thru walls of small intestines. 2-Nutrients travel to all cells of the body. 3-Cells burn nutrients to release energy stored in food. |
Elimination | 1-Body eliminates solid waste materials that cannot be absorbed into bloodstream. 2-the large intestine concentrates feces. 3-the waste passes out of the body thru the anus. |
Cecum | pouch on the right side |
Colon | 5 feet long that has 4 parts |
Rectum | terminates into the anus |
Liver | secretes bile; aids in digestion |
Gallbladder | small sac under the liver that stores bile |
Pancreas | organ under the stomach; produces insulin & enzymes |
Food passage through the GI tract | FOOD ENTERS THE ORL CAVITY...oral cavity-->pharynx-->esophagus-->stomach-->duodenun-->jejunum-->ileum-->cecum-->ascending colon-->transverse colon-->descending colon-->sigmoid colon-->rectum-->anus--> FECES LEAVES THE BODY |
