immune cells | cells that protect from infection |
vaccine | prepreation to generate active immunity |
B cells | -mature in bone marrow -15%-25% of lymphocytes -activated by helpter T cells, respond to specific antigen, and make antibodies (immunoglobulins) -mature ones are called plasma cells which make lots of anitbodies |
T Cells | -mature in thymus -make up 75%-85% of lymphocytes -there are several types of T cells |
Helper T cells | -contain CD4 coreceptor and are called CD4 cells -begin the defensive response against a specific antigen |

kaposi sarcoma | a malignancy often seen in AIDS patients |
antibody | protein produced in response to an antigen. |

phagocytosis | prosess of ingestion and destruction |
allograft | tissue graft from another person or cadaver |
lavage | washing out of a hallow cavity, tube, or organ |
complement | group of proteins in serum that finish off the work of antibodies to destroy bacteria and other cells. |
immunity | state of being protected. |
lymph nodes | located: there are hundreds stationed all over the body. they are especially concentrated in the neck, armpits, and groin. |
thoractic duct | along the front of the spine from the back of the aorta up to the left subclavian vein. (left lymphatic duct) |
thymus | endocrine gland located in the mediastinum. |
subclavian vein | underneath the clavicle |
right lymphatic duct | right side of the chest just below the clavicle |
spleen | left upper quadrant of the abdomen below the diaphragm and lateral to the kidney. |
