What are the four parts that medical terminology is based upon?   Prefix, Word root,combining form,and Suffix.

What is a prefix?   A prefix is the part at the beginning of a word, usually indicating position, time, number, direction, color, or negation. Example: ‘hyper-’ meaning excessive is a prefix in the word hyperthermia

What is a wordroot?   The main part of the word is called a word root (WR). A WR usually indicates a body part and is derived from Greek and Latin words. Example: ‘gastr’ in the word gastromegaly is derived from the Greek word ‘gaster’, which means stomach.

What is combining form?   A combining form is a ‘vowel plus the word root’ and just like the word root indicates a body part. Example: ‘gastr + o’ in the word gastromegaly is a combining form.

What is a suffix?   A medical word ends with a suffix. A suffix is derived from Greek and Latin words and usually indicates a condition, procedure, disease, or part of speech. Example: ‘-megaly’ in the word gastromegaly is a suffix and means enlargement.

what is an appendage?   any body part attached to the main structure. ie, the arms and legs.

What is articulation   Place of union between two or more bones. Also known as a joint.

what is cancellous?   spongy or porous structure as found at the end of long bones.

what does crucate ligaments mean?   Ligaments that cross each-other forming an X within the notch between the femoral condyles

What is Hematopoiesis?   Production and development of blood cells, normally in the bone marrow.
