graph paper:   paper on which the ECG is recorded that is preprinted wi th horizontal lines representing time and vertical lines representing voltage.

calibration:   the process of setting a machine to a standardized scale so the results will be comparable and tests can be compared.

artifact:   additional electrical activity on an ECG tracing as a result of muscle movement, alternating current (AC), or disruption of the cable, rather than the electrical activity of the heart.

isoelectric line:   the baseline; a straight line on the ECG recording that represents an absence of electrical activity.

ventricular hypertrophy:   enlargement of the ventricle.

ground lead:   a lead that is not used to determine electrical activity,but rather as a reference point.
