Special Procedures   Some test require special or additional collection procedures. Special preparation or equipment, handling or timing may be needed.

Blood Bank Specimens   A large pink top tube is required. Strict procedures must be followed!

Cooled Specimens   Certain metabolic changes continue even after a specimen is drawn. Chilling the specimen slows down this metabolism. Specimen should be placed immediately in a slurry of crushed ice and water.

Some examples of cooled specimens   -Ammonia-Grey on ice -Lactic Acid-Grey on ice -Ionized Calcium-Green on ice

Blood bank special "Strict" procedures   -Patient's name -Medical record number -D.O.B. of patient -Date and time of collection -Phlebotomist initials

Light sensitive specimens   Some test components are broken down in the presence of light causing falsely decreased values. Special tinted tubes are available. A specimen can be wrapped in aluminum foil.

Some examples of test that require light protection.   Bilirubin-Infants special tubes Red cell folate-Wrap in foil Serum folate-wrap in foil

Bleeding time test   Special pre-surgical screening test. This test is performed on the inner surface of the forearm, using a blood pressure cuff pumped to 40 to maintain constant pressure. Incision made with special sterile lancet.

Material list for Bleeding time test   -Automated bleeding time device -Blood pressure cuff -Stopwatch -Filter paper -Alcohol pad -Gauze -Butterfly bandage or steri-strip

Blood glucose monitor   A small device that measures blood sugar levels. The phlebotomist will sometimes be trained to operate monitor. You will mostly check sugar levels on diabetic patients

Blood cultures   Blood cultures are done on a patient with a fever of an unknown origin, or if there is a reason to suspect bacteria or septicemia.

Blood culture bottles   -Collected in sets of two -One bottle is Anaerobic, meaning without air. -The second bottle is Aerobic, meaning with air Anaerobic bottles are filled first when using a syringe. When using a butterfly needle the aerobic bottles are filled first.
