Aphasia   No speech or difficulty with speech.

CVA   Cerebrovascular Accident = stroke = brain attack; caused by a blood cot or bleeding in the brain; causes permanent damage.

TIA   Transient Ischemic Attack; temporary interruption of blood flow to the brain; symptoms are temporary.

Thrombus   Blood clot that sits still, not moving.

Embolus   Blood clot that is moving.

Convulsion   Seizure.

Plegia   Paralysis.

Hemiplegia   Paralysis on one half or side of the body (caused by a stroke or injury to the spinal cord).

Paraplegia   Paralysis from the waist down (usually caused by trauma or damage to the spinal cord).

Quadriplegia   Paralysis of all four extremities (from the neck down).

Petit mal seizure   small seizure (stare off into space for 20-30 seconds or 1-2 minutes).

Grand mal seizure   Loss of consciousness, involuntary jerking movements, and incontinence of urine (call 911, stay with the person, protect their head, move furniture away, and do not put anything in their mouth).

Status epilepticus   Person has one seizure after another for 20 minutes - 1 hour or even longer (this is a life threatening situation; call 911).

Vertigo   Dizziness.  
🗑
Akinesia   No movement or slowness of the movement.  
🗑
Dyskinesia   Difficulty with movement.  
🗑
Tremors   Shaking or trembling of the extremities (usually the hands).  
🗑
Emotional lability   Quickly changing emotions (e.g.: one minute laughing and the next minute crying).

Concussion   Bruise or injury to the brain caused by trauma (brain is thrown to one side and hits against the inside of the skull causing the injury to the brain tissue).

LOC   Level of consciousness (how alert and awake you are).  
🗑
Lethargic   Sleepy, slow to respond.

A&O x3   Alert and oriented x3 (to person, place, and time).  
🗑
TBI   Traumatic Brain Injury (trauma or injury that causes permanent damage to the brain).  
🗑
Electrocencephalogram   EEG, measures the electrical activity of the brain.  
🗑
Cataract   Clouding over of the lens of the eye (treatable with surgery).  
🗑
Diplopia   Double vision.  
🗑
Presbyopia   Near sightedness.  
🗑
Presbycusis   Hard of hearing.  
🗑
Tinnitus   Ringing in the ear or ears.  
🗑
Alzheimer's disease   The number one cause of dementia.  
🗑
Dementia   Set of signs and symptoms that indicate a problem with cognition (your ability to think).
