Volumes and Capacties of the Respiratory System

Quiz yourself by thinking what should be in each of the black spaces below before clicking on it to display the answer.
        Help!

Volume/Capacity Name
Definition
Tidal Volume (TV)   volume of air exchanged in one cycle of respiration
🗑
Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)   volume of air that can be inhaled after tidal respiration
🗑
Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV)   volume of air that can be expired following passive, tidal expiration
🗑
Resting Lung Volume   also known as expiratory reserve volume; volume of air that can be expired following passive, tidal expiration
🗑
Residual Volume (RV)   volume of air remaining in the lungs after a maximum exhalation
🗑
Dead Air   volume of air within the conducting passageways that cannot be involved in gas exchange (included as a component of residual volume)
🗑
Vital Capacity (VC)   the volume of air that can be inhaled following a maximal exhalation
🗑
Vital Capacity (VC)   includes inspiratory reserve volume, tidal volume, and expiratory reserve volume ( = IRV + TV + ERV)
🗑
Functional Residual Capacity   the volume of air in the body at the ends of passive exhalation
🗑
Functional Residual Capacity   includes expiratory reserve and residual volumes ( = ERV + RV)
🗑
Total Lung Capacity (TLC)   the sum of inspiratory reserve volume, tidal volume, expiratory reserve volume and residual volume ( = IC + FRC)
🗑
Inspiratory Capacity (IC)   the maximum inspiratory volume possible after tidal expiration ( = TV + IRV)
🗑

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
