Quiz yourself by thinking what should be in each of the black spaces below before clicking on it to display the answer.

Term
Definition
Abdominal cavity   Divides into an upper and lower part. The upper part contains the stomach, small intestine, most of the large intestine, appendix, live, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen. Lower part - pelvic cavity
🗑
Abdominal regions   A precise method of division including the right upper quadrant, left upper quadrant, right lower quadrant, and lower left quadrant. Right quadrant - epigastric, umbilical, & hypogastric/pelvic part. Either side:hypochondriac, lumbar, and iliac/inguinal.
🗑
Anterior   Body parts in front of the plane, or on the front of the body, are called ventral or anterior.
🗑
Body cavities   Spaces within the body that contain vital organs. The two main body cavities include the dorsal/posterior cavity and the ventral/anterior cavity.
🗑
Body planes   Imaginary lines drawn through the body at various parts to separate the body into sections. Directional terms are created by these planes. The three main body planes include the transverse, midsagittal, and frontal.
🗑
Buccal cavity   One of the small cavities for the mouth, teeth, and tongue.
🗑
Caudal   Body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal column (also known as the tail).
🗑
Cranial   Body parts located near the head.
🗑
Cranial cavity   One of the two sections of the dorsal cavity which contains the brain.
🗑
Distal   One of the directional terms with its used to describe the location of the extremities (arms and legs) in relation to the main trunk of the body. Body parts distant from the point of reference.
🗑
Dorsal   Body parts on the back of the body are called dorsal or posterior.
🗑
Dorsal cavity   One long, continuous cavity located on the back of the body. It is divided into two sections: the cranial cavity and the spinal cavity.
🗑
Frontal (coronal) plane   Divides the body into a front section and a back section.
🗑
Inferior   Body parts below other parts. Example: The knee is superior to the ankle, but inferior to the hip.
🗑
Lateral   Away from midline.
🗑
Medial   Toward the midline.
🗑
Midsagittal plane   Also known as the median plane, it divides the body into right and left halves.
🗑
Nasal cavity   Another one of the small cavities, it has to do with the nose structures.
🗑
Orbital cavity   A small cavity for the eyes.
🗑
Pelvic cavity   The lower abdominal cavity contains the urinary bladder, the reproductive organs, and the last part of the large intestine.
🗑
Posterior   Also known as dorsal, it is the body parts on the back of the body.
🗑
Proximal   A directional term meaning body parts close to reference.
🗑
Spinal cavity   Containing the spinal cord.
🗑
Superior   Body parts above other parts.
🗑
Thoracic cavity   Located in the chest and contains the esophagus, trachea, bronch; lungs, heart, and large blood vessels.
🗑
Transverse plane   A horizontal -lane that divides the body into a top half and bottom half.
🗑
Ventral   Body parts in front of the plane, or on the front of the body.
🗑
Ventral cavities   Large than the dorsal cavities and separated into two distinct cavities by the dome-shaped muscle.
🗑
Anatomical position   The body is facing forward, standing erect, legs slightly apart, and holding the arms at the sides with the palms of the hand facing forward.
🗑
Sagittal   Divided your body into right and left sides.
🗑
The liver is (inferior, superior) to the diaphragm.   Inferior
🗑
Fingers are located (proximal, distal) to the wrist.   Distal
🗑
The skin on the dorsal surface of your body is said to be located on your (anterior, posterior) surface.   Posterior
🗑
The great (big) toe is (medial, lateral) to the little toe.   Lateral
🗑
The skin on your leg is (deep, superficial) to the muscle tissue in your leg.   Superficial
🗑
When you float face down in a pool, you are lying (prone, supine) and on your (anterior, posterior) surface.   Prone, anterior
🗑
The lungs and the heart are located (superior, inferior) to the abdominal organs.   Superior
🗑
Which cavities is the heart located in?   Pericardial and thoracic
🗑
Which cavity is the liver located in?   Abdominal
🗑
Which cavity are the intestines located in?   Abdominal
🗑

🗑
Which cavities is the lung located in?   Thoracic, pleural
🗑

🗑
Which cavity are the kidneys located in?   Outside of the abdominal cavity, the retroperitoneal space
🗑
Which cavity is the stomach located in?   Abdominal
🗑
Which cavity is the urinary bladder located in?   Pelvic
🗑
