Active/Passive Immunity + Hypersensitivity

Active Immunity   The individual produced antibodies against the antigen.

Passive Immunity   The individual receive prepared antibodies from another person.

Immunizations/vaccines   Substances that contain antigens to which the immune system responds. A form of active immunity.

Monoclonal antibodies   Identical antibodies that are produced from one type of B-cell.

Allergies   Hypersensitivities to a substance such as pollen or animal hair.

IgE mediated allergic response (Immediate allergic response)   An immediate response that leads to a release of histamine.

Anaphylactic Shock   Occurs as a result of an immediate allergic response where an allergen is in the blood stream. This can be deadly due to a drop in blood pressure. Epinephrine injection can help counter the anaphylactic shock.

T-cell mediated allergic response   Initiated by memory T-cells, sometimes called a delayed response. Not as an intense of a reaction.

Immunosuppressive drugs   Drugs used to prevent tissue rejection or autoimmune disease. These drugs are useful in organ transplants so the body does not reject the newly implanted organ.

Autoimmune disease   A disease where cytotoxic T-cells or antibodies attack the bodies own cells as if they are foreign. Examples include: myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn's disease.
