| 1970s cont. | Some larger hospitals adopt an electronic system. The biggest innovation in EHR progression is the integration of medical and procedural information into the systems, allowing physicians instant access to best practices.

| 1980s | Many new proprietary platforms are developed and the first inpatient/outpatient systems are used. Departmental records are integrated and can be accessed throughout a facility.

| 1990s | Computer network capabilities and large medical facility networks make integrating between/among multiple institutions possible and beneficial.

| 2000s | The Federal government enters the scene. As part of the 2009 economic stimulus plan, the government offers monetary incentives to those facilities that adopt the EHR.
