| Exudate | Material, such as fluid and cells, that has escaped from blood vessels during the imflammatory process. Deposited in tissue or on tissue surfaces and is often present in a wound.

| Serous Exudate | Consists chiefly of serum, the clear portion of the blood. It is clear and watery. Example: fluid in a blister from a burn.

| Sanguineous Exudate | Red and consists of red blood cells. This type of drainage results when capillaries are damaged, allowing the escape of red blood cells, and is fequently seen in open wounds. Bright-red indicates fresh bleeding; dark indicates older bleeding.

| Purulent Exudate | Contains pus, which consists of leukocytes, dead liquefied tissue debris, and dead and living bacteria. Usually thick with an unpleasant odor. It is white in color, but may aquire tinges of pink, green, or yellow depending on type of infecting organism.

| Suppuration | The process of pus formation.

| Serosanguineous Exudate | Consists of clear and blood-tinged drainage and is commonly seen in surgical incisions.

| Purosanguineous Exudate | Consists of pus and blood and is often seen in a new wound that is infected.
