Brain Structure | Function |
Cerebrum | Controls thought, memory, and senses |
Cerebellum | Maintains muscle tone, balance, and coordination of movement |
Brain Stem | Medulla Oblongata, Pons, and Midbrain |
Medulla Oblongata | Contains autonomic centers that control heart rate, respiration, and swallowing |
Pons | Links Medulla Oblongata and Thalamus. Sleep, respiration, bladder control, equilibrium, posture. |
Midbrain | Relays information for vision and hearing |
Diencephalon | Hypothalamus and Thalamus |
Anterior Pituitary | Secretes growth hormone |
Posterior Pituitary | Secretes anti-diuretic hormone and oxytocin |
Hypothalamus | Important autonomic and neuroendocrine control center |
Thalamus | Gray matter. Recieves auditory, somatosensory, and visual sensory signals. Sleep/wake states. |
Optic Chiasma | Where optic nerves meet |
Optic Nerve | Relays visual information to the brain |
Olfactory Bulb | Relays smell information to the brain from the nose |
Ventricles | Holds spinal fluid |
Spinal Cord | Relays information between brain and body |
Corpus Callosum | Band of tissue that connects the 2 hemispheres of the brain |
Gyri | Ridges of the cerebrum, increase surface area |
Sulci | Depressions of the cerebrum, increase surface area |
