Gitlow v. New York Due-Process, Bill of Rights now applicable to the States. Also known as Selective Incorporation.
Lemon v. Kurtzman Laws must have non religious purpose (secular), and its effect can't be religious.
Employment Division v. Smith Law is valid from the start, but loses validity if it targets religion.
Schenck v. United States Clear and Present Danger, speech is bad if it is Specific and Immediate.
Miller v. California Item must be prurient(excite someone sexually, must exist only to be prurient, and court must apply test as if part of the community.
New York Times Co. v. Sullivan Must prove media is false when printed or should have known it was false when story was printed.
Near v. Minnesota Media can be pulled back from release if it is a threat.
Mapp v. Ohio Exclusionary Act meant to discourage police misconduct. Criticized for punishing the innocent and freeing the guilty.
Miranda v. Arizona Miranda Rights. Rights to be silent, lawyer, and speedy trial. Anything said can and will be used in the court of law.
Gideon v. Wainwright State lawyer appointed only if really poor and possibility of facing jail time.
Furman v. Georgia Death penalty allowed.
Woodson v. North Carolina Instant death is illegal
Griswold v. Connecticut Birth control case and first time Supreme Court found right to privacy.
Roe v. Wade Abortion case. When is baby a human, 2nd trimester was decided
Planned Parenthood v. Casey 24 hour waiting period ok, states can decide what's necessary for aborting, minor needs adult signature, parent or judge. Husband can not have say for abortion.
