Government Vocab

Vocab related to the government

TermDefinition
Government A group of people who are elected to make laws and govern (run) a community, state, or country.
Democracy A type of government this is run by the people; a democracy allows its citizens to have a say in how the government is run.
Legislative Branch Makes our laws; also known as Congress.
Bicameral Our Congress is this because it has two parts: (1) Senate and (2) House of Representatives.
Executive Branch Enforces our laws and is the commander in chief of our military
Judicial Branch Interprets the laws to make sure they are fair.
Census An official count of the population taken every ten (10) years; it is required by the Constitution.
Supreme Court (SCOTUS) The head of the Judicial Branch of our government; it is the highest one in the land
Bill A proposed law.
Veto To reject.
Constitution The supreme law of the land.
Amendments Official change to the Constitution; there are 27 of these.
Rights Something that cannot be taken away.
