Civics Chapter 12 vocab

Federal System The sharing of power between the central and state governments
Grants-In -Aid money awarded to states by the federal government
Unicameral one house legislature
Bicameral a legislature consisting of two parts or houses
Census a population count taken by the census bureau
Apportion divide among districts
Malapportionment unequal representation in state legislatures
Line-Item-Veto to veto only a specific part of a bill
Commute to reduce a criminals sentence
Parole to grant a prisoner an early release from prison, with certain restrictions
Justice of the Peace the judge of a small local ocurt
Misdemeanor a relatively minor offense, such as vandalism or stealing inexpensive items
Magistrate Court police courts generally located in larger towns, may handle traffic violations, and civil cases involving small amounts of money
Civil Cases person of group taking legal action against another person or group
Plaintiff a person or party filing a lawsuit
Defendant an individual or group being sued or charged with a crime
Felony a serious crime such as murder, rape, kidnapping or robbery
Reserved Powers powers that the constitution does not give to the national government that are kept by the states
Concurrent Powers powers shared by the state and federal government
