| County | A subdivision of the state set up to carry out certain government functions |
| Board of Commissioner | The elected governing body for the counties |
| Ordinance | A bill or local law |
| County administrator | Receives policy directions from county commissioner |
| County seat | the city or town where the county government is located |

| Major-council form | A form of municipality government where voters elect a major and a city council |
| figurehead | A person who is head of an organization but has no powers |
| Strong-mayor system | headed by the mayor who serves as city chief executive and the city council who serve as cities legislative body |
| Council-manager form | A form of municipal government in which voters elect a city council, which hires a city manager responsible for day-to-day operations of the city |
| Commissioner form | A form of municipal government in which voters elect commissioners, each whom is the head of a department within city government |
| Special-purpose district | a form of local government created for a single job single group of tasks |
| Ad Valorem tax | a tax on real and personal property that is imposed on the properties fair market value |
