Name 5 differences between the House and Senate House: 435 members, 2 yr terms, smaller constituencies, strict rules, less prestige. Senate
Why did the 17th amendment change the way senators are chosen? Stipulated that senators be elected by votes of each state. Before amendment, senators hosen by state legislatures
Why did the framers set each senator’s term at 6 years instead of 2 years? Believed that a 6 yr term would make senators less subject to pressure by public opinion or special interest groups
How is the Senate a “continuous body?” Senator’s terms are staggered. All of its seats are never up for election at the same time
What are the 5 roles that a member of Congress plays? Legislator, Representatives of constituents, Committee members, Servants of constituents, Politicians
What is the difference between a trustee, delegate, politico, and partisan? Trustee: decide each question on its merits. Delegate: Vote the way their constituents want. Partisan: Feel duty-bound to vote along party lines. Politico: Attempt to balance elements of a trustee, delegate, and partisan. (pg 281)
