What is extradition? The idea that a person must be returned to the state where he/she is accused of a crime
What is the highest court in the U.S.? The Supreme Court
What is treason? An act of violence or betrayal against one's country
Who decides punishment for traitors? Congress decides the punishment
Is there any punishment for children of traitors? No, there is no punishment
What cases do federal courts hear? 1. Cases regarding the Constitution 2. Cases regarding federal law 3. Cases regarding Maritime Law 4. Cases involving disagreements between states
What does the word "maritime" mean? The word means "sea"
Who has the right to trial by jury? A citizen who is over 18 years of age
Can a citizen over the age of 18 request a trial by judge? Yes, he/she can request one
Who does a citizen under the age of 18 speak to in a trial? He/she speaks before a judge
Where does an impeachment trial for president occur? The trial occurs in the Senate
Who presides over the impeachment trial of a president? The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
What is required for there to be conviction for treason? A confession in court, OR two eye-witnesses
Who protects the U.S. states and citizens? The U.S. government does
How does a Constitutional amendment get proposed? 2/3 of the states of 2/3 of each house of Congress must propose it
How does a Constitutional amendment get ratified? 3/4 of the states in the Legislative Convention, or 3/4 of a state must ratify it
What does the Judicial Branch do? 1. decides if a law is Constitutional 2. Supreme court is the last word on cases, decides court cases 3. balances people's rights
In a disagreement between state and federal law, who wins out? Federal law does
How many justices are there in the Supreme Court? There are 9; 8 justices and 1 Chief Justice
How long is the term for a Supreme Court Justice? The term is for life
What are the rights of a citizen in a state? All U.S. citizens have certain rights no matter what state they live in
What are the laws mandating the creation of states? New states can be added, there can be no state within another state, and 2 states may combine with the consent of Congress
How many states were needed to ratify the Constitution? 9/13
What do office holders promise to do when they are sworn in? They swear to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution
What is U.S. land equivalent to? Federal land
Who owns U.S. land? The U.S. government does
Who controls U.S. land? Congress controls it
