American Government-

Six basic principles of the Constitution

QuestionAnswer
Popular Sovereignty In the US the people establish Government and give it it's power. The Government can only govern with their consent.
Limited Government No Government is "above the law". Much of the constitution consists of specific limitations on governemnt power.
Seperation of Powers Government power is divided. Seperation of powers is intended to prevent misuse of power by any of the three Branches.
Checks and balances Each branch of government has the authority to restrain the actions of either of the other two branches.
Judical Review Federal courts have the power to review governmental actions and to nullify (cancel) any that are unconstitutional, any that violate some provision of the Constitution.
Federalism A federal system divides power between a central government and several regional (local) governments. "Sharing of power". Central governments are powerful enough to be effictive but the people still have their rights.
