Six basic principles of the Constitution

| Popular Sovereignty | In the US the people establish Government and give it it's power. The Government can only govern with their consent. |
| Limited Government | No Government is "above the law". Much of the constitution consists of specific limitations on governemnt power. |
| Seperation of Powers | Government power is divided. Seperation of powers is intended to prevent misuse of power by any of the three Branches. |
| Checks and balances | Each branch of government has the authority to restrain the actions of either of the other two branches. |
| Judical Review | Federal courts have the power to review governmental actions and to nullify (cancel) any that are unconstitutional, any that violate some provision of the Constitution. |
| Federalism | A federal system divides power between a central government and several regional (local) governments. "Sharing of power". Central governments are powerful enough to be effictive but the people still have their rights. |
