| Battery | harming someone through physical cantact |
| Rules | specific expectations about what our behavior should be |
| Patriotism | demenstration of love and devotion to one's country |
| Seperation of Powers | dividing government powers among the three branches |
| Felony | a serious crime for which the penalty can be inprisonment for more then a year |
| Democracy | a system os government in which the power is shared by all the people |
| Speaker of the House | presiding officer of the House of Representatives |
| Jury of Peers | a group of ordinary citizens who hear a court case and decide whether accused is guilty or innocent |
| Common Good | the well-being of all members of society |
| Republic | a government in which citizens elect representatives to make laws |
| Assault | placing someone in fear without actual physical contact |
| Federalism | the division of powers between states and the federal or national government |
| Checks and Balances | the system that gives each of the three branches ways to limit the power of the other two |

| Judical Reveiw | The Supreme Courts power to overturn any law that it decides is in conflict with the Constitution |
| President Pro Tempre | an officer who presides over the Senate when the Vice President is absent |
| Initiative | process by which citizens can propose laws |
| Plaintiff | an individual or group of people who bring a complaint against another party in a civil case |
| Delinquent | a juvenile who is found guilty of a crime |
| Defendant | party who answers a complaint and defends against it in a court case |
| Bonds | Certificates that people buy from the government which agrees to pay back the cost of the bond ,plus a interest after a set period of time |
| Capitolism | another name for a market economy |
| Public Policy | Government response to public issues |
| Incumbent | someon who already holds the position for which they are running for ; good winning chances |
| Utilities | services needed by the public suchs as water electricty and gas |
| Capital | anything produced in an economy that is saved to be used to produce other goods and services |
| National Security Council(NSC) | group of officials that advise the President on matters of the country's safety |
| Freen Enterprice | system in which individuals in a market economy are free to undertake economic activities with little or no control by the government |
| Boycott | to refuse to buy a company's or country's products |
| Strike | whne workers refuse to work unless employers meet certain demands |
| Morals | beliefs aboout what is fair and what is right or wrong |
| Political Party | organization of citizens who wish to influence and control government by getting their members elected to office |
| Sovereighty | the power to make and carry out laws within a nation's borders |
| Sunbelt | Aregion of the US Whose climate is dominated by warm weather such as Florida, Texas, and Arizona |
| Baby Boom | the dramatic increase in number of births in the USthat occured between 1946 and 1964 |
| Money | anything that is generaly accepted as payment for a good or service |
| Bicameral | Two-House; As in two house legislature |
| Ammendments | changes; such as to the constitution |
| Feralist | people who support ratification of the constitution because they supprted a strong federal or national government |
| Anti-Federalist | people who apposed ratification of the constitution because the feared that a strong central government would endanger people's liberties |
| Appeal | to ask a higher court to reveiw a decision and determine whether jusitice was done |
| Double Jeopardy | being placed on trial twice for the same crime |
| Eminent Domain | The power of the government to take private property for public use |
