Chapter 6: The Declaration of Independence

What marked the start of the fight for independence? The Battles at Lexington and Concord
What was the Continental Army? An army for the colonies made up of troops from all of the colonies.
What did Patrick Henry say about war? "Give me liberty or give me death."
These events describe what? A few hundred men make a fort on top of Breed's Hill. General Howe orders an attack. The militia men begin to attack when the British are almost on them. The British attack three times and the Americans pull back. The Battle of Bunker Hill
Who was the one chosen for the commander in chief for the Continental army? George Washington
What was the pamphlet that scoffed at the idea that Americans owed loyalty to King George? Common Sense
What was the letter sent out to King George begging for peace (which was unsuccessful)? The Olive Branch Petition
Who was the youngest member of the committee which wrote the Declaration? Thomas Jefferson
On July 4, 1776, what occurred? The approval of the Declaration of Independence.
What are the rights common to everyone, as opposed to those given by law? Natural Rights
What did the 2nd Continental Congress do? Came up with who would be a part of the army for the colonies, appointed people to write the Declaration, and debated independence.
Definition: Independence freedom from control by another government or country.
Definition: Petition a formal, written request made to an official person or organization.
What did Jefferson write in the Declaration that spoke of everything that was unfair to the colonists? All of King George's Crimes and Abuses.
What was the controversial piece written in the Declaration and was removed? The passage on slavery.
