What did the Marbury Vs. Madison (1803) case do ? Established Judicial Review
What did the McCulloch vs. Maryland (1819) case do ? It increased authority of the national government, approved the concept of implied powers.
What did the Dred Scott vs. Sanford (1857) case do ? Ruled that noo Black Person could claim United States citizenship. Thrown out in 1868 by the fourteenth Amendment.
What did the Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896) case do ? Segregation is legal and constitutional as long as facilities are equal -"Seperate but equal"
What did the Weeks vs. United States (1914) case do ? Ruled that evidence gained by an illegal search by a federal officer is inadmissable in federal courts .
What did the Schenck vs. United States (1919) case do? Reasonable limits can be imposed on the first amendment guaranteed of free speech , no person may use free speech to place others in danger.
What did the Gitlow vs. New York (1925) case do ? The Constitution does not allow freedom of speech without responsibility utterances which involve such dangers of substantive evil may be punished.
What did the Olmstead vs. United States (1928) case do? Fourth Amendment protections extend only to tangible items not to spoken words. Overturned in 1969.
What did the Everson vs Board of Education (1947) case do? No tasx in any amount levied to support any religious activity. Acknowledge the incorporation of the first amendments limits on the states.
What did the Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka (1954) case do ? "Seperate but equal" schools for black and whites were declared unconstitutional.
What did the Gideon vs. Wainwright (1962)case do? No person can be denied a court appointed attorney.
What did the Engel vs. Vitale (1962) case do ? Prayer in public schools was declared unconstitutional.
What is the School District of Albington Township, Pennyslvania vs. Schempp (1963)case do? The practice of bible reading and the laws respecting them are unconstitutional in public schools.
What did the Miranda vs Arizona (1966) case do ? Declared that before questioning persons accused of crimes, police must tell them of there rights to remain silent and to be represented by a lawyer.
What did the In re Gault (1967) case do ? Ruled that minors were protected under the fourth, fifth and sixth amendement.
What did the Tinker vs. Des Moines (1969) case do ? Students do not abandon their civil rights at the school house door. Substantial evidence of disturbance has to be shown before free speech could be limited at school.
What did the Wisconsin vs Yoder (1972) case do ? Court upheld the religious rights of the Amish to educate their own children.
What did the Roe vs. Wade (1973) case do ? Court agreed with Roe and upheld her right to terminate a pregnancy in the first trimester. (90 days)
What did the United States vs. Nixon (1974) case do? Ruled that President Nixon could not withhold evidence just because he was the president.
What did the Westside Community Schools vs. Mergens (1990) case do ? Court directed schools to permit student religious groups activities on the same basis as other student activities when the schools operate broad-based extracurricular programs.
