Some sxs of URI Rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, cough, sore throat, sneezing, fever, malaise, lymphadenopathy lastin ~1week
Some examples of URI rhinitis, pharyngitis, tonsilitis, laryngitis, sinuusitis, otitis
MC cause of URI Rhinovirus
Tx of a URI Target sxs relief, fluids, rest (Abx usually not indicatied)
Inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose Rhinitis
Sxs Rhinitis Congestion, sneezing, itching, postnasal drainage, rhinorrhea
Tx of Acute Viral Rhinitis Decongestants, (2-3days max d/t rebound), nasal saline, actaminophen/NSAIDS. INCREASE FLUIDS
Course of Acute viral rhinitis 7-14days self-limited
Inflammation of at least one of 4 pair sinuses Rhinosinusitis or Sinusitis
Contributing factors to viral-bacterial Rhinosinusitis Allergy, mechanical obstruction, dental infection, intranasal cocaine use, anything to ^ mucous which can host a bacterial infection
Bacterial Rhinosinusitis major signs Facial/tooth pain, Nasal obstruction, nasal/postnasal discharge/purelence, duraion of sxs >10 days
Classifications of rhinosinusitis Acute: <4wks Subacute: 4-12wks, Chronic: >12 wks
Abx indications >10 days mod. sxs, facial swelling/tooth pain, sxs worsen w/i 10 days
4 Cardinal Sxs Chronic Rhinosinusitis Ant/post, mucopurulent drainage, nasal obstruction/congestion, facial pain-pressure-fullness, Decreased sense of smell (need at least 2)
