Ch. 24 metabolism

Metabolism and obesity

QuestionAnswer
Metabolism A series of biochemical reactions nutrients go through inside body cells; Substances are constantly being built up and torn down; cells use energy to extract energy from food then use some of this energy to drive their activities
Concepts of Metabolism 1. Energy Balance 2.Metabolic Rate 3.Glycolysis 4.Kreb's Cycle 5.Lipid and Amino Acid Metabolism
Obesity Is classified as a BMI of 30 or higher; Type 1 and 2 diabetes; Thrifty Gene Theory
Type 2 Diabetes Your body produces insulin but cells don't recognize it; insulin resistant
Thrifty Gene Theory Has to do with natural selection (genes); In times of famine and decreased crop production people with fast metabolisms die off while those with slow metabolisms are able to store fat and survive; we don't have famine issues anymore=fat
